Amsterdam Light Festival 2018 - IF.THEN.ELSE.
2018
IF. THEN. ELSE. ETHICS FOR SOCIAL MEDIA. Social media taking an greater important role in our lives. Our dependence on the media is increasing. Also the knowledge of the media about the users is increasing. Swim with this development? We are not caught up in the algorithms? We lose our freedom by global data?
Is there another route possible? Can we still back swimming? We are already caught or swimming will still around? The medium is the message.....to understand the current world, one needs to understand the media. The canal boat is now a big fish and swims in the trap. The visitor sails through 4 zones. Temptation, the FishTrap, the Scan and the Message. With color, light and special effects we told is our story about ethics for the Social Media. Depicted with symbols from the Social Media, the Google colors, a reflective trap, an abstracted light scan and a cautionary message in red light. Seen from the street is the bridge over the Herengracht an lightartwork in the environment. Studio Op&er wants to make a monumental statement for the preservation of our freedom with the IF.THEN.ELSE artwork for the Amsterdam Light Festival. Now and in the future. With simple constructions and (waste) materials we try to achieve a maximum result. Wood, transparent colored plexiglass, scaffold tube, old fishing nets, luminous paint and different types of LED lights are the materials which applied. The various components are prefabricated and later in parts assembled and disassembled. The artwork is resistant to stormy, wet and freezing weather.
Amsterdam Light Festival - Cogito Ergo Sum
2017AMSTERDAM LIGHT FESTIVAL. Cogito ergo sum - lighting in dark times. The first light emerge after the big bang, almost 14 billion years ago, as light and matter can escape and can move freely through the space. Light gives heat, safety.....the possibility to grow ... but light also ensures that we humans can communicate with each other. Communication is a essential part in the development and survival of humanity. In times of sickness and in health. For example in the 18th century, at the time of emergence of the Enlightenment. It was a response to the dogmatic faith of authority. The Enlightenment is seen as one of the pillars of Western civilization and put major changes to start of thinking about religion, philosophy, art, science and politics. She comes up for a division between Church and State and is based on justice and democracy. Cogito Ergo Sum - I think, therefore I am - is a philosophical statement of Rene Descartes. The ruling is the foundation for the Enlightenment. Surviving truths can prove to be false, and also your own perception can cheat you. You wonder how you can know something for sure. The simple fact that you doubt, implies that you exist. THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE: The big bang. A flashing light. Symbol for the birth of our solar system. Light as the source of our existence. Followed by an explosion of knowledge. Lighting. The word. The reason. Cooperation. The core of our existence. Made visible in a construction built up like a beacon. A beacon of light in the uncertain current time.
Follies aan Zee 2016
2016A folly is a building constructed primarily for decoration, but suggesting through its appearance some other purpose, or appearing to be so extravagant. They are an element of the landscape without function. The municipality of Wierden (Netherlands) organized, since 2013, the contest Folly at Sea. Every year participate many architects and artists from all over the world. There are now 6 folly’s around the lake. The designers for the folly’s this year are Don Hoppenbrouwer and Mari Baauw with Jessie Schouten. They worked in the spring of 2016 at the new buildings. The design for the folly from Don Hoppenbrouwer is a tribute to the spider. An abstracted image of the insect. The spider is one of the many residents of the park. There lived 1.3 million spiders at one hectare. And daily makes the spider itself useful by cleaning and feeding other insects. The location of the folly is a nice place on an island in the lake. With views in all directions. A place where people can relax, muse, playing, eating and drinking or just can waste time. The property was designed by the artist with Douglas wood and a steel structure. It has a diameter of 6 meters and is 5 meters high. The folly stays the coming years at the Lageveld in Wierden together with the other folly’s. You can see them daily during the opening hours of the park.
Follies aan Zee 2015 - Sitting on the dock of the bay
2015A folly is a construction that is intentionally useless or bizarre and serves no other purpose other than decoration. Many folly’s might be considered as art and let people dream, looking at the world in a different way. The location of the follies is the Lageveld, a recreation area in the outskirts of the municipality of Wierden. The design for the folly Sitting on the dock of the bay is inspired at the function of the recreation area. A direct relationship with the surronding has also been made. The place of the folly is in a spot on the waterfront. A place to relax, thinking, play, eat and drink or just waste your time. The folly stands for enjoying life.
Monument birthplace Erasmus
2015A design for the monument of the birthplace of Erasmus in Rotterdam. Theme: the world is my home. For centuries Erasmus birthplace was a busy tourist attraction, nowadays it’s a parking lot. The idea is to transform the existing space into a monumental green court in the city. A place for reflections. The design for the monument in the court is an abstracted facade of Erasmus’s birthplace. The sculpture is in the place where the backside of the house was. In the evening the sculpture is ablaze at the backside, so it creates a facade of light in horizontal and vertical lines. The court is enclosed on 3 sides by linden, that makes the surrounding buildings from the direct sight. A plane with low green buxus shows the drop shadow of the facade. Opposite the monument are benches between trees.
Mound Groningen
2015The Groninger Landscape wants to realize a mound across the dike near Noordpolderzijl. This hill outside the dikes offers the inhabitants of Groningen, but also the rest of the Netherlands, the opportunity to experience a mound. Without the safety of a dike, but trusting the idea that you are high enough to keep dry feet. More than 2500 years ago, the first mounds were built in Groningen. These structures have protected the Groninger population for centuries against water. The mounds lost their primary function when building dikes along the Wadden Sea, but fortunately many still remain. As a result, these residential hills became an important part of the cultural heritage of the province of Groningen. The realization of the relationship between mounds and the sea has also been lost. With the creation of an mound outside the dikes, the Groninger Landscape will return this awareness. The design for the new mound will be a recreational function. Recreants and birdwatchers can use the hill. A tower gives a good view of the Wadden Sea with its natural habitat. The tower refers to the former buildings and is also a landmark. At dusk, in the top of the tower begins a lamp to light, powered by solar energy, and is a beacon for the environment. Benches and picnic tables were placed in 3 recessed parts at the hill. Here is a sheltered view of the surrounding. The mound acts in summer as a large sunbathing and swimming area. A dike serves as a connection between mainland and hill. To create different sight lines for the visitor the dike is knotted designed.
Roundabout Oostburg
2013A new entrance for Oostburg. The history of the ancient walled city Oostburg (Zeeland) is characterized by rebellions against various rulers and the bombing of 1944, which the city largely destroyed. Symbol of Oostburg is the Unicorn. The Unicorn represented the strength and courage of the population. Oostburg become unlocked by the provincial road N253, containing 3 roundabouts leading to the city center. The roundabouts are the first entrance and impression of the city. Currently these are not specially designed or they strengthen the identity of Oostburg. The design for one of the roundabouts is inspired by the thought that the Unicorn symbolizes the strength and courage of the inhabitants of Oostburg. The Unicorn comes out on top in people when necessary. Now or in ancient times. This thought is designed by 8 sculptures of unicorns on the roundabout. The sculptures are in all directions. The Unicorns coming up from the ground, upwards, so that it looks like they be called. This creates a powerful, bright and surreal image on the roundabout.
Landmark Regge Dinkelland
2013The design for a landmark at the Regge is a place where one can rest during a walk. Enjoy the water, nature and the countryside. The landmark is a tower on a low artificial hill. A place with special sight lines to all sides. The landmark is a beacon in the landscape. The tower is made of natural materials which forms a unity with the landscape. The landmark is 7.5 meters high and has around seats on the ground level. The artificial hill is 1,5 meters high. On each side, two people can sit next to each other. By the 10-angular shape one can choose different views, sun or shade, in the wind or out of the wind.
Noise barrier airport Schiphol - I can hear the grass grow
2007Holland. The country below the sea level with its entire landscape, water and dikes. These elements are used to create an noise reduction device what the inconvenience of noise of airplanes for the residents of Hoofddorp greatly reduced. A temporary water screen. A dike body finished with natural stone is parallel to the runway. On either side run channels. The dike is located at a distance of 150 metres from the runway. About the dike body is a high pressure water pipe. When a plane takes off or land is a waterscreen from 6 metres high under pressure sprayed. The waterscreen follows the movement of the airplane. The water is collected in the channels and reused. The required energy for the pumps and high pressure installation is generated with solar panels. The temporary waterscreen screens the sound. The new hilly land scatters the sound and the vegetation absorbs the sound. By the temporary nature of the waterscreen the sight lines in the landscape stay. The height of the different elements is nowhere higher than 1.5 metres above ground level (eye level). The temporary and moving waterscreen provides a spectacular view during take off and landing of airplanes. By applying of sustainable and natural materials is the noise reduction device a part of the landscape.
