A folly is a building constructed primarily for decoration, but suggesting through its appearance some other purpose, or appearing to be so extravagant. They are an element of the landscape without function. The municipality of Wierden (Netherlands) organized, since 2013, the contest Folly at Sea. Every year participate many architects and artists from all over the world. There are now 6 folly’s around the lake. The designers for the folly’s this year are Don Hoppenbrouwer and Mari Baauw with Jessie Schouten. They worked in the spring of 2016 at the new buildings. The design for the folly from Don Hoppenbrouwer is a tribute to the spider. An abstracted image of the insect. The spider is one of the many residents of the park. There lived 1.3 million spiders at one hectare. And daily makes the spider itself useful by cleaning and feeding other insects. The location of the folly is a nice place on an island in the lake. With views in all directions. A place where people can relax, muse, playing, eating and drinking or just can waste time. The property was designed by the artist with Douglas wood and a steel structure. It has a diameter of 6 meters and is 5 meters high. The folly stays the coming years at the Lageveld in Wierden together with the other folly’s. You can see them daily during the opening hours of the park.
